SCOPE OF WORK: Experienced educational support role providing technical, pedagogical, administrative, and logistical support to faculty in a lab or instructional setting for science classes at River Valley Community College. This position has responsibility at the Academic Center in Keene, NH, and the campus in Claremont, NH and reports to the RVCC Chair of Science Faculty.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Accurately prepares chemical mixtures and solutions for use, sets up and maintains laboratory equipment as necessary in both of the science laboratories;
  • Maintains and prepares bacterial cultures for faculty and student use in microbiology labs;
  • Assists students and faculty with use of laboratory equipment;
  • Stores and disposes of chemical and biological wastes in accordance with applicable local, State, and Federal regulations;
  • Assists faculty in running labs, the setup of record-keeping systems relative to EPA and OSHA compliance, maintaining appropriate records relative to EPA and OSHA;
  • Purchases and maintains supplies and equipment, contacts commercial vendors as instructed by the Department Chair;
  • Provides general laboratory maintenance including, but not limited to, basic repair and maintenance of microscopes, maintaining computers and software, and setting up and taking down laboratories;
  • Maintains appropriate levels of inventory, orders supplies when necessary and keeps laboratories organized;
  • Serves as Biological Safety Officer;
  • Performs regular inventories of lab supplies (such as chemicals, slides, and models);
  • Complies with all college, system, state and federal rules and regulations;
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associate’s or technical degree from a recognized college or technical institute with major study in laboratory technology.

Experience: Two (2) years’ experience in laboratory work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in either the Medical Laboratory or Clinical Laboratory Technician settings preferred.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Considerable knowledge of the procedures and practices of laboratory technology. Considerable knowledge of the use of laboratory equipment and skill in the application of techniques utilized in conducting analyses using complicated laboratory equipment. Ability to follow standard laboratory methods and procedures. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to maintain exact records of tests conducted. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the college appointing authority.
