Compensation: $825 - $975 per credit, based on adjunct faculty rank (determined by education and experience)
Position Overview:
NHTI is seeking a qualified adjunct faculty member to teach Contemporary Ethical Issues (PHIL-242C). Philosophy is traditionally defined as the search for wisdom or understanding. While contemporary scholars may disagree on the precise delineation of the term, nearly all regard it as a critical inquiry into the most fundamental questions facing human beings. Ethics proves to be a major facet within the domain of Philosophy as a whole.
This course will survey myriad topics within the specific area of Contemporary Ethics – ranging from the ethics of care to the fundamentals of free speech. Students will be asked to think critically about each of these topics with respect to the various areas of philosophical inquiry. The aim is not only to gain an understanding of, and appreciation for, complex philosophical problems and to help guide students in their analysis of these issues so as to facilitate the effective formulation of their own views concerning the world and their place in it.

Course Description:
This course is a philosophical examination of major contemporary ethical issues. Topics may include biomedical ethics, business ethics, environmental ethics, human sexuality, and ethics related to life-and-death decisions. The emphasis is on acquiring the philosophical skills necessary to guide self and others in the process of ethical decision making. Cases are used for studying and discussion.
Explain the basic meaning of morality and the importance of moral reasoning in society.
Identify, describe, and differentiate between major ethical theories and moral philosophies.
Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and functions of moral arguments, recognition of invalid arguments, and the benefits to be gained from respectful engagement of those with differing views.
Apply ethical theories to contemporary issues on a social and personal level.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach the assigned course using provided curriculum and instructional materials aligned with program standards.
- Facilitate class discussions, assignments, and assessments to foster student engagement and learning.
- Provide regular feedback and maintain accurate records of student progress.
- Maintain professional currency in the field and comply with college policies and standards.
- Attend department meetings.
- Maintain daily email communication with students, faculty, staff and department chair of department.
- Follow all rules, regulations, and requirements of NHTI and the Social Sciences department.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Master's degree in Philosophy or equivalent
- Experience: Prior teaching experience required and familiarity with Canvas (or similar LMS) preferred.
- Residency: Must reside in NH
