Position Summary

Great BayCommunity College seeks a qualified instructor to teach three non-credit courses: CBAM110M: Industrial Print Reading; NCBM111 Metrology Fundamentals; NCBM 112 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) Fundamentals. These hands-on courses introduce students to mechanical measurement techniques and engineering blueprint reading. The instructor will guide students through interpreting mechanical drawings — including tolerances, welding symbology, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and performing precise measurements using a range of industry-standard instruments, preparing them for quality, inspection, and manufacturing roles.


Scope of Work

The instructor will be responsible for:

  • Delivering instruction across all course topics, including:
    • Engineering drawing standards, visualization, line usage, drawing layout, and notes
    • Orthographic projection and multi-view drawings
    • Reading and interpreting dimensions, tolerances, and drawing annotations per ASME Y14.5
    • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) reading and application
    • Reading assembly drawings and parts lists
    • Welding processes and interpreting welding representations/symbols
    • Reading and interpreting thread specifications and annotations
  • Leading hands-on lab instruction in the use of measurement tools and gaging methods, including:
    • Calipers (6"), scales, tape measures, protractors, and micrometers (including depth micrometers)
    • Height gages, surface and angle plates
    • Various dial and other indicators
    • Thread gages
    • Attribute gaging (Go/NoGo) and sized gages such as blocks and pins
  • Planning and facilitating a blend of in-class/online lecture, discussion, and lab activities (2 theory hours + 3 lab hours weekly)
  • Designing collaborative and individual projects, in-class activities, and real-world inspection scenarios
  • Teaching students to compare blueprint dimensions/tolerances against physical part measurements to verify compliance with design specifications
  • Instructing students on defining appropriate inspection methods for a given mechanical component and drawing
  • Guiding students in preparing clear, accurate inspection reports documenting measurement results and interpretations
  • Incorporating relevant technology, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation platforms, and CAD software where applicable
  • Developing and administering reading activities with quizzes, lab reports, and (optionally) practical exams
  • Providing timely, constructive feedback on student work and inspection reports
  • Evaluating student progress against the 7 stated course objectives (drawing interpretation, GD&T, dimensioning, measurement/inspection compliance, tool proficiency, reporting, inspection method selection)
  • Maintaining course records, grades, and attendance in accordance with college policy
  • Ensuring proper safety and handling procedures for precision measurement tools and lab equipment

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, Quality Assurance, Drafting/Engineering Design, or a closely related field (Bachelor's degree preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience reading and interpreting engineering blueprints, including tolerances, GD&T, and welding symbols, per ASME Y14.5 standards
  • Hands-on professional experience using precision measurement instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, dial indicators, gaging equipment) in a manufacturing, quality control, or inspection setting
  • Working knowledge of orthographic projection, multi-view drawings, and dimensioning practices
  • Experience conducting or overseeing part inspection against engineering specifications
  • Ability to teach both foundational and applied metrology and print-reading concepts to students with little to no prior experience
  • Strong communication and hands-on lab facilitation skills
  • Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience preferred (college-level instruction a plus)
  • ASME GD&T certification (e.g., GDTP) preferred but not required
  • Familiarity with CAD software and quality documentation practices (inspection reports, SPC) is a plus
